Multi-point vibrotactile feedback for an expressive musical interface

چکیده
This paper describes the design of a hardware/software system for rendering multi-point, localized vibrotactile feedback in a multi-touch musical interface. A prototype was developed, based on the Madrona Labs Soundplane, which was chosen for it provides easy access to multi-touch data, including force, and its easily expandable layered construction. The proposed solution makes use of several piezo actuator discs, densely arranged in a honeycomb pattern on a thin PCB layer. Based on o↵-the-shelf components, custom amplifying and routing electronics were designed to drive each piezo element with standard audio signals. Features, as well as electronic and mechanical issues of the current prototype are discussed.

Vibrotactile Feedback in Digital Musical Instruments
This paper discusses vibrotactile feedback in digital musical instruments. It compares the availability of intrinsic vibrotactile feedback in traditional acoustic musical instruments with the lack of vibrotactile feedback in most digital musical instruments. A short description of human sensory ability with regard to this form of feedback is given and the usefullness of vibrotactile feedback to...
متن کاملA Systematic Approach to Musical vibrotactile feedback
This paper presents a new approach to the integration of vibrotactile feedback into digital musical instruments. A design strategy for musical vibrotactile systems is developed based on stimulator properties and neurophysiological studies of vibrotactile perception. A software vibration synthesizer driven by perceptual sound features extracted from audio feedback has been created based on these...
متن کاملExamining the Effects of Embedded Vibrotactile Feedback on the Feel of a Digital Musical Instrument
This paper deals with the effects of integrated vibrotactile feedback on the“feel”of a digital musical instrument. Building on previous work developing a DMI with integrated vibrotactile feedback actuators, we discuss how to produce instrument-like vibrations, compare these simulated vibrations with those produced by an acoustic instrument and examine how the integration of this feedback effect...
متن کاملScratch-Off: A Gesture Based Mobile Music Game with Tactile Feedback
This paper presents “Scratch-Off”, a new musical multiplayer DJ game that has been designed for a mobile phone. We describe how the game is used as a test platform for experimenting with various types of multimodal feedback. The game uses movement gestures made by the players to scratch a record and control crossfades between tracks, with the objective of the game to make the correct scratch at...
متن کاملBeat Extraction from Expressive Musical Performances
In order to analyse timing in musical performance, it is necessary to develop reliable and eÆcient methods of deriving musical timing information (e.g. tempo, beat and rhythm) from the physical timing of audio signals or MIDI data. We report the results of an experiment in which subjects were asked to mark the positions of beats in musical excerpts, using a multimedia interface which provides v...
